DIY CITY
Presented by RMIT School of Architecture and Design
Directed by Mel Dodd, Program Director, RMIT Architecture (Biography)
Saturday 18 July, 10am - 6.30pm
Invitation only
DIY CITY considers that a provocative examination of Do-It-Yourself culture is crucial to the production of space and place in the in the 21st century city. If there is a threat that DIY culture has the capacity to marginalize designers, how can we positively engage with the socially and politically liberating aspects of this practice in order to stimulate active citizenship and public life in the peri-urban fringe?
DIY CITY will be investigating how people themselves can orchestrate growth and development at the suburban edges of Melbourne, in collaboration with architects and designers as types of creative enablers. The laboratory will investigate public and low cost housing and infrastructure for the disadvantaged within communities. Methods of self-build, community build, pre-fabrication and employment and training initiatives will all be considered as providing technologies and systems which could co-opt people into building alternate and socially sustainable futures.
How might architects retain an integral role in the process of designing and making space in a DIY culture? DIY CITY will consider the expanded role of the architect and the tensions between the need for expertise in building technologies versus the ability to 'do-it-yourself'.
