Movement shapes the city. From the early 17th century William Harvey's groundbreaking work on the circulation of blood in the human body convinced people of the significance and benefits of free movement. For city planners this inspired them to conceive of cities as principally circulation spaces. The late 20th century has revealed another face to this liberating moving vision. Urban public spaces no longer inter-connect at a human scale. We are running out of fossil fuel and into a new era of pollution-driven climatic chaos and there is no short-term technological fix. How can we re-occupy the urban environment, shifting the balance back to muscle powered transport, light vehicles and highly desirable public transport options while creating engaging, comfortable, safe convenient public space that makes using it more exciting than driving away.
